The Cost of Black Excellence Research Institute was established to bridge the critical gap between diversity awareness and organisational accountability.
For too long, the physical and psychological toll of navigating predominantly white workplaces has been treated as a personal resilience issue for Black and BAME professionals to solve. We exist to reframe this reality through empirical data, proving that the Excellence Tax™ is a measurable, systemic mechanism of extraction.
The Institute's work began not in an academic faculty, but at a breaking point. Our founder and Lead Researcher, Natasha Williams, understands the unique challenges Black and BAME professionals face because she lived them at the highest levels.
With over 14 years of business leadership experience, including tenure as a Director of Building Surveying, management, and entrepreneurship, Natasha navigated the intense pressures of corporate infrastructure. On paper, she was the definition of Black Excellence. In reality, she was paying an exorbitant, invisible tax.
The emotional labour of constant code-switching and the hypervigilance required to exist in rooms not designed for her eventually culminated in burnout so severe it resulted in hospitalisation. It was a terrifying wake-up call that forced a complete halt to the life she had built.
To truly heal, Natasha spent over a year in Jamaica recovering. During this restorative period, she realised that an intellectual understanding of burnout was insufficient; the trauma of corporate extraction was stored physically within the body.
This revelation prompted a radical pivot. Natasha qualified as a trauma-informed, somatic resilience coach and deepened her academic studies into organisational psychology. She combined her years of commercial leadership with emotional healing to form The Cost of Black Excellence—transitioning her personal recovery into public liberation infrastructure.
The Institute's audits and strategies are unique because they do not rely on generic HR theory. They are anchored in four distinct pillars.
Rooted in over a decade of high-level business leadership. We understand commercial pressures, enterprise risk, and the practical realities of board-level management.
We bypass surface-level diversity metrics to examine how workplace structures and systemic biases fundamentally alter employee behaviour and safety.
Recognising that corporate trauma is stored physically. Our insights are informed by qualified somatic resilience practices and nervous system regulation.
Driven by 98 in-depth, proprietary datasets mapping the exact mechanics of extraction across the UK. We deal in evidence, not assumptions.
Whether you are a corporate board seeking a rigorous culture diagnostic, or an individual professional seeking sanctuary and strategy within our community, we are building the infrastructure you need.
